A quick question for you today

I'm thinking about the term "not-for-profit" and how it applies to all arts groups.

I think it sucks. I think it is self-persecution. I think it says, "We're weak and we want to be your bitch." And you? What do you think?

Any other terms that might be more empowering? Or is the "not-for-profit" bitchdom of arts groups here to stay for the long haul?

Non-profit has become synonomous with entitlement.

It's indicative of the nanny state we live in when money is taken from some members of the community and then given to others who have been annointed by "doing good works".

Individuals should have the choice to support (or not support) who they wish.

The hell with non-profits. Let all groups pay every kind of tax. If people want to give money; so be it. No deductions for anyone. If something is quality- people will gladly pay for it.

Nor should the people sucking off the non-profit teat be paid wages that are out of balance with the prevailing wage of the community at large. Tax dollars (in the form of City, County, State, Federal grants) should not be used to pay ANYONE running a non-profit a salary of over 80k a year.

To those who cry that non-profits are needed "for the community". OK. All programming is free. Salaries paid to "workers" are capped. Programming is evaluated on quality and acutual active attendence by the community at large; not by insiderish log-rollers who work only to guarantee their ongoing existence.

The current system is screwed. Blow it up.
Start over.

The faux human animal, THE CORPORATION was and is a tax scamfor the wealthy. Biggest mistake in the economic world.

All Corporations (4-profit or not-40 should have a one generation life, cannot be sold, traded, transferred. After 20 years they die and if those involved want to go on, they start up a new one.

there is no other way. Until more people become educated in terms of understanding art and thus appreciating it in the way that counts (money) these organizations must be non-profit. Otherwise they would not exist. Even though i'm an artist who believes strongly in the arts i admit that art is not a necessity, (one can live without it) it's what comes after one has all the necessary things. In addition there are some artworks that cannot be sold like performances and happenings and other ephemeral works. So the only way to support these works would be not for profit.
