Secretary of the Arts - Sign the Petition!

Quincy Jones thinks it's a good idea for Barack Obama to have a cabinet level Secretary of the Arts. If the man who has worked with Sinatra and Michael Jackson thinks so, so do I.

The Secretary of the Arts Petition that is circulating the internet right now is a start in focusing that agenda. Click way to go to the petition now.

Ugh... do we really want to get the government all up in our shit?

I mean, is it really that hard to trace the theatre world's fucked-up-ness back to the creation of the NEA, then the art community's dependency on it, and then our floundering disconnect from reality when the republicans came through and gutted the NEA?

Isn't this just politics as usual and thus totally predictable? Democrats come in, create new departments and cabinet positions, which the Republicans then underfund with "starve the beast" tactics and we end up- after a few years of getting addicted to government money- with nothing but another pile of empty ineffectual beurocrats, who the right wingers get to bitch about.

Are we not artists? Shouldn't we be more creative than this? And a petition? i can't think of a more boring, ineffectual, half-effort at political action than that.
