Just passing on the info from Jamie Johns, the now FORMER Resident Music Director at The Skylight. (Note to self, Gilbert & Sullivan might be the Skylight's strength, PR not so much):
My letter said: fired for insubordination and attacks on the Skylight Opera Theatre.
I couldn't make this up if I tried.
3 smart alecky remarks:
So they've dismissed Bill, Diana, and Jamie. I can't imagine how they expect to continue witht the quality and professional artistry that was the Skylight's hallmark. I've worked with all three of these artists and Skylight has done a great disservice to these dedicated artists, the company, and our audiences. It's often necessary in the preservation of business to consolidate jobs and save. The danger in this is when the lion eats the lamb. The artistry and its designers and guardians must be protected, not excised. This is very unhappy news. I'm concerned for the future of my friends as well as the future of one of the finest theatres in our region. Insubordination? I wonder what incited it? Artists forced to defend their art can be as vehement as a mother wolf with only one cub. That's no reason to dismiss them from their jobs. I'll watch this unfold with great interest.
See now people understand why i left the theatre years ago. If i was Bill, Diana, and Jamie I would be thankful they don't have to work in that hellhole of a bussiess and i mean theatre in general. Worked in the theatre for age 16 to 52 and then said "fuck it!" now 61 and could not be happier. I would tell Bill, Diana, and Jamie be happy they are free and go enjoy life and don't waste your time with theatre.
My heart breaks anew every time I consider what is happening at The Skylight. I fear its special "Milwaukeeness" is vanishing before my eyes. How cruel.
