I write this letter to you, not as a patron of The Skylight, not as a past performer at The Skylight, but as a professional colleague. I think the time has come to admit something, my friend. You are in a no win situation, and conceding that is going to go a long way towards letting The Skylight start the monumental work it needs to do to steer the ship in the right direction.
This is not meant as an indictment to your character, these are just the plan facts. Since the announced management change at The Skylight here's how the scorecard looks. On the minus side:
- Patrons have started to request subscription refunds
- At least one annual donor who gives at a more than respectable level has publicly said they will not be doing that and are taking Skylight out of their will
- A growing group of artists who have supported The Skylight with their talents over the years have said they will not continue to perform at The Skylight because of this decision
- At least two Skylight Board members have resigned
- The lead critic of the single major daily print and online news source in this market, the man who you and your marketing person must deal with to pitch ideas for celebratory stories about The Skylight, has just written a stinging criticism of how this has all played out and has called for your resignation.
- How about this weather. Gotta love our Milwaukee summers!
I was struck reading an article from this weekend's New York Times Magazine written by Matt Bai called "Everyone a Winner? The Lost Art of Conceding Defeat." You might want to give that a read.
I'm not saying that you can't do it. Maybe you can. I'm just saying that if you love The Skylight in the way that you have expressed, then the greatest show of your love might be saying, "Sorry. It's time for me to go."
I've thought about what I would do in your shoes, and since I am a Managing Director of a 50 year old institution, too, it seems pretty clear to me. I'd step down. I serve at the pleasure of the volunteers, artists and patrons of my institution. If I displeased them in the manner of what is happening at Skylight now, I'd step down, tough as it might be.
Sincerely,
Jonathan West

I am in shock that there appears to be no recognition or acknowledgement of the damage that has been caused by Eric (and Suzanne)
Well put Jonathan! The only thing left for Eric is major damage control. And, unfortunately, the only was to do that is remove himself from the situation.
Wow, what a hard decision that would be to make!
The Executive Board made the decision to fire Bill and the other staff. Blaming this exclusively on Eric is idiotic. This would be like blaming the lead violinist because the arrangement sucked. At the end of the day, jobs are few and far between. Should Eric have went against the executive board and risked his own job and ability to provide for his family. I would like it if for one single second all of you attempt to look at it from his perspective. He (Eric)is the one who is screwed here. He had to fire a loved and respected employee who was good at his job. He did so knowing there would be severe backlash. This backlash has carried over to Susan as well which is unfair and wrong. These are good people, very good people. He has a family to provide for and allowing the theater company to run in the red would be the quickest way to find himself on the unemployment line. No worries though, there are tons of theater director jobs laying around out there in this economy right?!!? The way the executive board and Eric handled the firing was far from properly. I like the idea of the swan song season for Bill. But to read what everyone is saying about someone I consider an outstanding person of very moral character frankly pisses me off. Eric inherinted a facility that needed substantial upgrades. He inherited a really crappy economy. He inherited an geographic area which over the past 10 years has been tapped for philanthropy...the County Museum, Art Museum and Zoo construction projects have sapped a lot of money from the philanthropy funds of many of the big givers. Given the operational loss, what would you people have done to run in the black? Firing anyone and consolidating responsibilities is not an option...so how would you fix it?
It's never fun when someone loses their job. Having had to let friends go in the past for the same reasons, I empathize with Eric. But to make the assumption that he is a power hungry monster with no regard to the human element involved is erroneous. To expect someone who relys on their job to support thier family to risk losing it for the sake of a good ol' boy is nonsensical. What would all of you smart people with no business background do I wonder?
fourguinness: obviously you need to put DOWN your Guinness and start reading. So many suggestions have been made already about what could have and should have been done, and you haven't seen any of them?
You don't think any of these "smart" posters have any business experience? For one, you are reading the blog of someone who runs a theatre company and has done so for years.
Doing a little history work prior to jumping into this conversation would have made you look a whole lot more knowledgeable.
No doubt our blog host is accomplished in his own right...But I am to be led to believe based on his posts that he has never had to make a decision that "rocked the boat" with his actors and staff. With that in mind, I question whether he has faced significant budget short falls, overwhelming facilities improvement needs, dwindling philanthropy and this economy in general. From my research....it appears that the Sunset Playhouse hasn't been hit nearly as hard as the Skylight.
I wonder if he gains approval and concensus in all decisions he makes to avoid hurting someone's feelings or making an unpopular decision. In my non-theater management experience, most decisions made for the sake of preserving harmony and appeasing hired help are nearly always the wrong decisions for the company.... As it relates to fund-raising and eliminating a popular figure, admitadely, I am not qualfied whatsoever to speak on that matter. I can see where that would have some negative consequences. My overall point as inelequant as it may come across is that Eric is not a bad person. He is a good man,he is a good father, he has proven to be a good managing director in the past as well as an artistic director. He may or may not be as good as Bill... Time will tell if he can weather this media storm. But, I can tell you that the decision was made with the positive intention of helping the Skylight financially. Could they have trimmed $200K somewhere else...I don't know...nor do I expect anyone else in the general public does. It was something that he struggled with knowing he had to do and something he knew would cause all sorts of backlash. He was following the direction of the executive board. If anyone is culpable, it is the executive board that approved and possibly recomended this action without consulting the remainder of the board. That appears to be very underhanded. Don't blame their proxy in Eric. Again, I ask what would you do in a similar situation.... run in the red and lose your job?? Again, it's hard enough for an an average Joe to find a job...cannot imagine how hard it would be for him to find another one..... Bottom line, if I had to fire my best friend tomorrow to keep my job and provide for my family.... sorry Buddy.... You're Fired. Doesn't make me an A-hole. Just highlights where my priorities are at.
It certainly does.
1) Wonderfully put, Jonathan.
2)Why is it that NO supporter of Eric will share their real name?
Very telling. Very telling, indeed.
Jon Stewart
Frankly, I agree with Fourguinness..... The Executive board seems to be far more in the wrong than Dillner. Yet Dillner is sitting on the hot seat and they are sitting on the sidelines scott free....
I suspect that people don't want to use their real name in fear that you people will somehow retaliate against them.... Face it, supporters of Dillner are in the minority while all you thespians are standing together. Perhaps its intimidating to them.
"No doubt our blog host is accomplished in his own right...But I am to be led to believe based on his posts that he has never had to make a decision that "rocked the boat" with his actors and staff. Uh... I think Artsy knows a thing or two about budget short falls. You can take his word on this.
(Vive la B&B!)
Did that 4Guinness person just call me "the hired help?" I take personal offense! 23 years of blood, sweat and tears makes me more than the hired help. Remember, Dillner showed up a year ago. And, no, I would not blindly follow a decision from the board to save my own ass.
How is what happened to Bill any more tragic than a shop foreman losing his job in Cudahy after 30 quality years? Where is the outrage and calls for blood for the company managers for our ficticious shop foreman. It's happening all over the place. Unfortunately, our foreman doesn't have someone at the Sentinal Journal championing their cause. Did you think because you have talented and are artists that you were somehow shielded from the challenges of the real world. Good people lose their jobs every day. Some justly some not justly. Companies make decisions that damage morale and anger their staff. At the end of the day, you are either so angry and disenfranchised that you quit or make a decision to live with it as best you can and get back to work. I don't see Eric quiting. I don't see the board back peddling. If they did back peddle, I would expect Bill to tell them to get F'd.... He is connected enough and talented enough to go anywhere else he choses. Either way, the Skylight will survive as it has for generations. Maybe worse off, maybe better off....who for sure knows at this point. Sure you can speculate, but the threater company can easily become a self fulfulling prophecy. We think it will suck with Eric as AD therefore it will. Wouldn't the quickest way to get rid of Eric (running with the safe assumption that this is your overwhelming desire) to give him enough rope to hang himself? Or....are you more worried that he may actually do well in the job? I wonder if any of you actually want him to be successful and therefore the Skylight to be succesful or if you'd rather watch your 23 years of blood sweat and tears be for nothing? Everyone has focused on Bill as the victim and Eric as the tyrant...but what, just what if, Eric actually is successful.... would anyone acknowledge it or is this just nepotism for a friend and local versus an outsider versus true concern for the theater company.
Becky-
Despite your belief that blood, sweat and tears makes you more than you are, rest assured, you are as much hired help as an auto shop mechanic. Both have skills and abilities that the general public doesn't possess. Both work hard at your craft, both are infinitely replaceable. By definition.... ur hired help sista. We're all replaceable!! There's always someone out there who can do the job as good as us regardless of how much value we perceive outselves to bring to the table. Wake up...coffee is done.
This bickering is hilarious.... A bunch of drama queens given some real life drama. A little more challenging than the drama you typically experience such as an incorrectly made mochachino or someone stepping on your lines....
Message to Skylight...way to completely F up an otherwise routine cost cutting effort. Had you crafted how you were going to handle this, there would be much less ill will and negativity.
Message to Skylight actors, staff and directors... if you don't like how things are being run, feel free to test the free market and try to get a job elsewhere. Otherwise shut the F up.
Happened upon your blog via JS Online... Love the lively debate. Seems to me that the Executive Board really screwed up here. Bill's smiling presence was the first exposure I have ever had to the theater. Unfortunately, as it was during Pirates of Penzance, I regret I won't see it again. Based on what I read, he was certainly very good at what he did and well liked. Don't know much about this Dillner guy, but simply not being a local or tied to Milwaukee doesn't seem like a reason to dislike him so much. I am guessing many of you didn't care for him before Bill was fired. This may have just added fuel to the fire. For the sake of a relatively new fan of the Skylight...I sure hope that you find some common ground and move forward. Aren't you actors the ones who coined the phrase "the show must go on"...... Sure hope it does.
Wow, too bad FourGuiness is hiding behind a drunken facade. Perhaps if you had all the facts, you wouldn't be so quick to jump on the 'poor Eric' bandwagon, small as it is. Or perhaps, you ARE Eric! If you aren't, you can take it from one who was fired by this 'wonderful family man', he is a power-hungry, narcissistic megalomaniac. And while you are telling the rest of us how ignorant we are for not understanding his plight, why aren't you also stating how ignorant it was for Dillner to take this job? If he had done his homework prior to being hired, he would have known how dire the Skylight situation supposedly was, and he would have kindly said 'thanks, but no thanks', since you are making him out to be the closest thing we have to a living saint. And if you would put down your drink long enough to read everything, you would also see that we are NOT blaming just Dillner for this. We are holding the entire board responsible. But, Dillner has now been made the 'face' of Skylight, so it is his job to do some explaining. Do you have any connection whatsoever to the Skylight, or are you just someone who likes the sound of his/her own voice?
Not Eric, not connected to the Skylight whatsoever, Just like the sound of my voice....
I do know Eric and his family and have personally been in a situation where I've had to let people go who were great at their jobs for money reasons. I too was crucified and made to be the villian. I don't know if he had to do it or not....just playing devils advocate with regard to him being forced to do it.... I don't know if he was or was not, nor does anyone else but him and the Executive Board.
I don't like seeing any person vilified by people who have made no attempt to understand the forces behind the decision. No one puts themselves in another person's shoes anymore. While I understand that the concern of the Artists is to make art, it is the concern of the managers to make the business profitable or at a minimum sustainable. If this was not possible under the present organizational structure, then changes had to be made for the sake of saving the theatre as a whole. Should other avenues have been persued....certainly. Were other avenues brainstrormed?? None of us know. Had all other avenues been explored prior to arriving at their decision, at least they could have demonstrated a logical flow of thought and effort being made before arriving at their ultimate decision. If they did explore other options, they are idiots not to make them known.
Am I the best judge of character for Eric...nope. I know him in one context only. Is anyone who was fired by Eric the best judge of his character...nope there too. I know I'd have a hard on for someone who fired me, I would expect no less from anyone else.
Only some time will tell what damage has been done, if any, to the Skylight. It was around long before either Bill or Eric. I have no reason to believe it will not be around after they are both gone.
My name is Rhonda Begos. I'm not afraid to say my name at all. I'm against all of this stuff that the board, and Eric Dillner are collectively participating in. And to those who say that Eric is a scapegoat, Eric is a grown man who can make decisions. And when you see a wrong, you deal with the wrong. If you're being put out there to take the blame - get yourself out of there. You don't just sit there and take it.
Should he risk his employment to do the right thing? Let's see - Rosa Parks risked her life and job to do the right thing. Martin Luther King risked his life to do the right thing - Schindler risked his riches and his life to do the right thing. You can say, well it's not the same. No it's not. This is far less tragic, but has the same premise. You see a wrong, you go against the grain to make it right.
I worked at a job for about a year and I was treated like crap. Talked down to, and not spoken to very kindly. The interaction was terribly disrespectful. Another young woman came to work there, and she and I immediately hit it off and became friends. She was a single mom, and our sons were about a month apart in age.
She was a temporary employee, but was excited about the prospect of becoming permanent because now she would have health insurance for her and her son. She would have some stability, which was something that her life lacked. Only - her boss confided in me that even though he told her that he would hire her, he planned on letting her go on Monday. He told me this on Friday.
I was very conflicted about what to do. But in the end, I knew that my friendship with her was more important. If I had to bartend somewhere I would, but in the long run, I didn't want to risk my integrity for a paycheck. So I told her. And about a month later, I lost my job.
But she still had hers. She ended up staying there until she found something better, and now she has gotten totally on her feet. And guess what - I found another job and I still have my friendship. And I know if I were in the same position, she would do the same for me.
There are things in this life that are irreplacable especially when you perform the wrongs that have been performed by this board. We wouldn't be where we are as Americans if everyone who took a chance was worried about losing their job, and what someone would do if they spoke up. It is those kinds of people who have afforded us opportunities that we otherwise would not have.
I don't know anything personal about the people who are on thie board. All I know is what someone told me a long time ago. Perception in the eyes of the public is reality. You are perceived by your actions, by your surroundings, and by your reactions. Not by what you say, or how you are defended. It's a shame that the music is getting lost in all of this.
Rhonda.... you are an absolute idiot. Did you honestly compare Dillners "need" to do the right thing to Rosa Parks, MLK and Schindler?????? Holy crap, that was idiotic. It's hard to take anything you write seriously after something as utterly stupid as that, but I will make a valid attempt.
You claim to have taken the honorable stance of informing a "friend" of an impending job loss. I assume you told her that in confidence....am I correct in that assumption? A month later, you were fired. Hey Dumb Ass.... She opened her yap that you told someone and you got canned because of that. You were thrown under the bus by your friend!!
Also, comparing your ability to take the high road with regard to your employment is a wee bit different than that of a Managing Director. Let us assume for the sake of discussion that you didn't like your job. You walk out the door. You walk in a bar two doors later and are hired. Net Loss....Zero. Let's assume the case of an actor who is protesting their beliefs here. They walk off the job in protest...which is well within their rights. There are only so many theatres in the S/E Wisconsin area. They may have to move, they may take a pay cut, they may not be able to find work without substantial delay. Substantial risk involved for the performers, especially those who have loved ones who depend on their earning capacity. Now, move on to Managing Directors... Even fewer opportunities for them to find new employment than of the performers. Perhaps months of unemployment, loss of earning, loss of healthcare. Pretty significant risk for a person with a family to consider.
So, even if he was wrong, which is up for debate with the artistic community certainly tipping the scales toward yes..... to quit would be an idiotic move on his part and a very self destructive one at that.
Shindler, Parks and Kinf..... Man, I have heard everything now.
Ryan Ferrel
I recently came accross your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I dont know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.

Maybe, Ryan, if you had read the entire paragraph which read:
“Should he risk his employment to do the right thing? Let's see - Rosa Parks risked her life and job to do the right thing. Martin Luther King risked his life to do the right thing - Schindler risked his riches and his life to do the right thing. You can say, well it's not the same. No it's not. This is far less tragic, but has the same premise. You see a wrong, you go against the grain to make it right.”
...Then you'd realize that I wasn't comparing the actual action, I was comparing the reasons behind the action. Doing the right thing to change the status quo not just for you, but for others. I happen to be African American, so of course I understand what Rosa Parks did for me. I am only pointing out that something that seems like it may not affect many in the end, does affect many in a positive way, when your meaning behind it is everything that is right and straightforward.
I was making a large amount of money at this job, which I deserved after having been a professional for over 15 years. I was the only one in my house with medical insurance. I also have a condition, juvenile diabetes, which is impossible to manage without medical insurance. Do not make assumptions about how different my situation was than his. If you had asked my circumstances, you'd know. But it's obvious that it is important for you to create your own realities with no information so that you can validate to yourself what your thoughts are.
Maybe you should follow the quote below:
“Leaders are people who do the right thing; managers are people who do things right.” Warren Bennis
I would much rather be a leader. A leader proves to be far more valuable in life than bringing home a paycheck. When you do the right thing, everything else falls into place eventually - it may not seem so early on - but it does. You maintain your friendships, and your sense of being a good person when you think about more than just yourself. This world we live in is not just based on the families we raise. It is also based on how we treat and help each other. This is how we raise our families. How we show right from wrong.
By the way...what are the actors who've quit risking? Or the ones who have been fired - what have they lost?
Lastly, your personal attack against me was totally unneccessary. I am not sure why you chose to use that word to describe me without knowing me, or ever having a conversation with me. I won't come back at you with anything offensive as it is not in my nature to do so. I would ask, if you plan on responding, please respond with words that are productive and make me think. Not words that are hurtful and totally baseless.
By the way Ryan, the situation as it involved me and my job was this:
I told my friend what was going to happen on a Sunday - She was scheduled to be fired that Monday. When she and I got to work on Monday morning, we discussed how we would handle the situation. I was sitting next to her when she called her boss to ask him if he planned on firing her which was part of what she and I collectively planned to do. I asked her to do it, because initially, she didn't believe me when I told her. I didn't care that I was going to lose my job or that my name would be mentioned. I knew I was going to lose my job. But I knew in the end that I would be okay, which I am. She was a single mom with no money and had just put money down on an apartment and she would have been struggling big time. I know...it's hard believe that there are people out there who risk their own safety to help another person, but I've done it many times - and the payoff is way better than any bonus, or insurance plan, or 401K plan that I've ever received.
You don't know what you're talking about, and you're grasping at straws so that you can make more sense. And why call someone a dumb ass? My God...do you have any class at all? Totally, totally unneccessary.
I was there, I know what happened...and I am far, far away from whatever world you've pinned me to be a part of. I am one of the most intelligent people you've ever come across. And I am intelligent because I've involved you in debate. If you honestly found me to be an idiot, what does it make you to respond to someone who, according to your description and webster's dictionary, doesn't even have the mental capacity to retain your words?
I guess I'll just have to pray for you, since I don't know your situation and I don't want to make assumptions based on my own judgements. It's pretty sad though that people have gotten to a point where they can't have a discussion about their thoughts and beliefs without throwing out obscenities. I know not everyone is like that...it's just sad that I had to come across 1.

Found some cool stuff here http://www.gamerfuse.com Grand Chase “Grand Chase” is the first real time online fighting game that allows up to six players to fight one another. The game features arcade-style controls that makes it easy to learn, and offers combo attacks which fighting game enthusiasts will enjoy. There are currently nine characters to choose from in the English version of “Grand Chase,” each of which has a unique fighting style, weapon, and four job upgrades as you level up. “Grand Chase” isn't an MMO with only six players in each match, but it allows you to fight another team in 3 vs 3, or play with 5 other players in a 6-player competition against the computer.
