What does Artsy Schmartsy really believe? Here's the unpopular truth.

What I believe
by Artsy Schmartsy

I believe...
  1. ...that summer is better than winter.
  2. ...that the current Managing Director of The Skylight and the Executive Committee of The Skylight should resign due to the negative effects of an intensely miscalculated announcement of a management restructuring that has turned into a public relations disaster. They are not bad people. They are, in fact, good people. They are well intentioned and tried to solve a problem. I think their decision might be right, but the handling of it was so wrong and their silence regarding the public outcry promotes an arrogance that I simply cannot support as a quality of an effective leadership team.
  3. ...that The Skylight needs a huge management shake up, and this means that personal friends of mine will be faced with difficult decisions and I don't like anymore than anyone, but I know it's what's needed for the good of this community jewel.
  4. ...that there is no better food than pizza.
  5. ...that anyone, anytime can call me on my shit.
  6. ...that women are always smarter than men.
That's it. Thanks for listening.

I'm not sure about that last one. I think maybe woman are USUALLY smarter than men. I can't get in touch with my wife, though, so I'm not sure.

As someone who has very rudely called Jonathan on his shit on more than one occasion, i can verify that he speaks the truth.

Go SCHMARTSY!

1. . .. autumn is better than either.

2. . . . I agree that MOST of those remaining at Skylight are not bad people, they have just made VERY bad choices. They need to step up, give their supporters a big "My Bad" and move forward. Ignoring the outcry isn't doing them any good.

The upside is that the ousted Skylight employees will land on their feet. I'm am positive that every company in the country is trying to find a way to snap up Bill or Diana, because no company in their right mind wouldn't want these two! For me, for many years Diana was the face of Skylight & they could have found no better ambassador.

3. . . . I fear that if he Board doesn't self-correct soon, they will destroy themselves, which would be the ultimate crime.

4. . . . no comment needed!

5. . . . been there, done that!

6. . . . Knowledge born of a man who lives surrounded by women! While maybe not ENTIRELY accurate, the politically correct way to survive home life!

I believe that there are good people on boards but that Milwaukee boards have had a 5 year spate of bad decisions. When faced with a financial crisis, why do boards look to slash and burn. For example, Theatre X had a long history of fixing our own financial problems by firing ourselves and working without pay until the problem was solved. The collective (remember the times) did that to themselves and we all saw the greater good as the goal. We survived until our board made a powerplay, got in an executive director (non collective type) and ousted the ensemble (collective) in order to save the institution. The Public Museum board got in an expensive executive director with great credentials and look what happened to them. Detroit, once driven by new designs (arts and engineering), were taken over by the bean counters. To save money, they determined all GM cars were to share the same chassie. All GM cars are now boring and who looks forward to the new model AND look what has happened to GM. I think there is a flaw in the design of boards and executive directors. The arts are the arts because of the artists not their supporting boards. Not all financial problems can be solved by strict, quick, financial solutions. Boards, stop excluding the artists in these financial decisions. Artists have a long history of getting along on very little and waiting for the rewards (rather adult, I'd say). Boards, don't look to one person to be the go-to, answerable person to shoulder all the responsibility because that makes your board life easier. Boards, better and bigger administrations don't always add up to better institutitions. Artists, don't let your dislike for the business end cause you to act like an ostrich. Your boards won't save you.
